Rothco

For the 2nd brief in this years ICAD upstarts it was Rothco's turn to issue the brief.
This one was for Options Crisis Pregnancy Service. Click on the image below, to see the brief and have a scroll through my thought process, from begining to finish.

Japanese Pasta Sauce

These are some strange ads for pasta sauce in Japan, seriously warped visuals from some creative director's past trip. In the ad, an army of uniform, severed cat's penises, with the faces of babies; beam down from equally suspicious spaceship. As soon as they reach the dry land, they engage in their unrelenting death march, swivelling towards their prey in a fashion similar to the 1990's phenomenon of square dancing. I believe this is in order to stun the victim. However; if I was a kid and saw stacks of tins in a super market with all these guys on them, in a similar uniform fashion, I’d cower in fear

p.s. Whats the deal with the freaky representation of western children in these ads. Use your own creep'd out children, Japan

A Laboratory Approach to the Creative Process

.
4 simple steps; to making ideas work........

1. Think - First we must come up with an idea
2. Make - Then we must test this idea by making it, to see if it has legs
3. Inflate - Then we must expand on it, implementing the idea in various media
4. Release - Then we must let go of it

Ad Work

I am currently finishing a Msc. in Advertising at D.I.T. this year. Throughout the year I gathered together a portfolio of Print ads/T.V. & radio scripts, all of which can be viewed on my Krop.com account

Video Portfolio

As my background is based in fine art, film and animation, over the past couple of years I've made a few different works ranging from music videos to conceptual art pieces. These can all be viewed on my Vimeo account.

Spire Rocket

This is a recent piece from my portfolio. I made this video for Squeez orange juice as part of a competition. The goal here was to produce a viral, that would be sent around Irish social networks and promote Squeez orange juice. I had the idea of turning the Spire into a rocket, which would be transformed as soon as it had some of that sweet juice. This was made using a mini dv cam and I did all the special effects in Adobe After Effects. Enjoy!

Semi Conductor

Semiconductor are animators Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt. Below is one of my favourite of their works entitled 'Magnetic Movie'

Taking audio recordings of experiments done on invisible magnetic fields, they use this audio to drive the animation, in terms of shape, form and motion, in order make these magnetic fields visible

This project was produced for the British Art Council programme Animate Projects. The Archive is well worth a look, as it shows the work produced over the past 15 years, of many talented animators and film makers.

Anti- Aesthetic

Irish animator David O'Reilly has an interesting stand point on computer based animation.
He believes that too much time and resources is put into attempting to replicate real world
scenarios and that computer programs come with there own set aesthetics, which are overlooked and manipulated in order to replicate 'the real'

Too many animators/studios today rely on effects and plug-ins to do all the work for them.
His argument is one of anti-aesthetics, where the computer based animation environment is embraced for what it truly is; Here is a couple of examples of this idea in action.... Please Say Something & RGB XYZ.
